With globalization and technology as the driving forces, we find ourselves getting in closer and closer contact with more and more people. As a result, knowing how to say at least a few words in a language such as German is becoming an ever-more-vital tool. Our natural curiosity to find out about other cultures motivates us to hop on a plane and find out firsthand what everyday life is like in the Germanspeaking regions: Germany, Austria, Switzerland, South Tyrol in northern Italy, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. Conducting international business in an increasingly competitive market necessitates personal contact; hence, more businesspeople are traveling overseas to countries like Germany, which has the largest economy in the European Union. On a more personal level, you may have friends, relatives, and neighbors who speak German, or you may want to get in touch with your heritage by learning a little bit of the language that your ancestors spoke. Whatever your reasons for wanting to learn some German, German For Dummies, 2nd Edition, is a terrific choice because it gives you the skills you need for basic communication in German. We're not promising super fluency here, but if you want to know how to greet someone, purchase a train ticket, or order food from a menu in German, you need look no further than this book. Introduction iPhone Application Development All-in-One For Dummies

When Apple introduced the iPhone Software Development Kit (SDK) in 2008, the iPhone and iPod touch suddenly became the handheld computers they were meant to be. Interest in the SDK exceeded Apple's expectations — in fact, Apple's servers supplying the beta for the first SDK download were overwhelmed. Since then, the App Store has grown to become the repository of over 140,000 applications, which collectively are driving innovation beyond the reach of other mobile devices. The success of the App Store — over three billion downloads — has turned the iPhone into the premier mobile device for publishing software. All the leading mobile applications typically appear on the iPhone first, and as a reader of this book, you may be creating the next one. As I continue to explore the iPhone as a new platform, I keep finding more possibilities for applications that never existed before. The iPhone or iPod touch is a mobile computer, but not like a mobile desktop. Its hardware and software make it possible to wander the world, or your own neighborhood, and stay connected to whomever and whatever you want to. It enables a new class of here-and-now applications that give you access to content-rich services and let you view information about what's going on around you and where you are, and interact with those services or with others on the Internet. One of the hallmarks of a great iPhone application is that it leverages the iPhone's unique hardware, especially its ability to know where the user is. The iPhone SDK includes tools such as MapKit, which makes it much easier to use the location-based features of the iPhone in an application. MapKit makes it possible for even a beginning developer to take full advantage of the location hardware, and I've included the code for an example app (called RoadTrip) to show you how. And the frameworks supplied in the SDK are especially rich and mature. All you really have to do is add your application's user interface and functionality to the framework, and then "poof" . . . an instant application. If you're familiar with the first version of the SDK, you're in for a pleasant surprise: The latest version of the SDK, which includes Xcode 3.2.2, is a lot, lot better and easier to use. What's really hard, after you've learned your way around the SDK and its various framework, is figuring out how to create a structure for the iPhone application's data and models for the logic of how the application should work. Although there are lots of resources, the problem is exactly that: There are lots of resources — as in thousands of pages of documentation! You may get through a small fraction of the documentation before you just can't take it anymore and plunge right into coding. Naturally enough, there will be a few false starts and blind alleys until you find your way, but I predict that after reading this book, it will be (pretty much) smooth sailing. That's why, when the For Dummies folks asked me to combine all the knowledge and wisdom I could muster to write these minibooks on developing software for the iPhone, I jumped at the chance. Here's the definitive tome that I wish I had for a reference myself when I started developing iPhone software. Editor's note: Both authors (Tony and Neal) have published applications for the iPhone — you can find several of Neal's apps, including ReturnMeTo, in the App Store, along with Tony's app, Tony's Tips for iPhone Users. iPhone Application Development All-in-One For Dummies

Introduction Tax For Australians For Dummies 2nd Edition

Australian income tax law can be very complex and difficult to understand. You have to thumb through two income tax assessment Acts equivalent in size to four telephone books, thousands of income tax rulings and a library full of legal books to find the right answer. The dominant purpose of the income tax legislation is to raise revenue by levying a tax on taxable income. The tax Acts point out that assessable income minus deductions equals taxable income, and then tells you the rules you need to follow to calculate your assessable income and allowable deductions. The Acts also tell you who must pay income tax and how to work out how much income tax you must pay. Generally, you have a choice of two ways to solve your tax liability problems. You can either pay a registered tax agent or solicitor who specialises in income tax law, or you can try to find out the answer yourself. If you pay someone, you quickly find that the meter starts ticking the moment you walk through the door. Although seeking professional advice is highly recommended and encouraged, you need never underestimate your own abilities. If you use basic research skills that you acquired during your student days plus the skills you use to do your job, you may be pleasantly surprised at how adept you are at taking on responsibility for your own tax journey. So, if you have a winning edge€— the skills to do basic research€— why not have a go? If you can't solve your problem or you lack confidence, at least you tried. And if you do seek professional advice, you're in a position to have a meaningful conversation (especially if the fee is substantial!). As a student once said to me: 'I'll at least be in a position to verify and check the facts out myself and not feel like a fool!' Tax For Australians For Dummies 2nd Edition

A Brief History of Photography

It may be said that photography, as a new way of making images, had its beginnings as soon as 1816 when Joseph phore pce succeeded in creating a camera image on light-sensitive silver-chloride paper. Unfortunately, he was not in a position to fi x the image, so there is no pictorial record of his accomplishment. The oldest preserved photographic image, produced by Ni???¡ì?|pce in 1827, is housed at the University of Texas in Austin in the Gernsheim Collection. In 1833 a Brazilian, Hercules Florence, produced images in writing sensitized with silver salts and coined the word photography. It wasn???¡§o?¡§¡§t until 1973, however, that his achievements were recognized. Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre, who began a partnership with Ni???¡ì?|pce in 1829, continued to invent and announce, in January 1839, his daguerreotype process. The daguerreotype was a laterally reversed positive monochrome image on a polished silver-coated copper plate. The image was unique and was not reproducible. Henry Fox Talbot, having learned of the announcement by Daguerre, decided to announce his Talbotypeprocedure that he had developed earlier in 1835. The Talbotype produced a monochromatic image on sensitized paper that was both tonally and laterally reversed. Since the image was a negative, it was contact printed onto another piece of sensitized paper with sunlight to produce a positive image. Following the introduction of photography in the fi rst half of the 1800s, a advancement of important advances appeared?awet-collodion emulsions on glass plates, dry silver-halide emulsions on fl exible fi lm, albumen from egg-whites to suspend the silver salts?ato be replaced in turn by gelatin, noncombustible (safety) fi lm base materials, higher-speed fi lms followed by fi ner-grain fast fi lms, orthochromatic, panchromatic, and infrared emulsion sensitivity, reversal and negative color fi lms and papers, and false-color fi lms, instant-picture processes?a to mention only a sample ofthe newest innovations that have been introduced.1 Truly, the period in the center of the nineteenth century to the end of the twentieth century produced the impressive high-tech chemical evolution in photographic imaging. Now, a dramatic shift from high-tech chemical to high-tech electronic imaging is taking place. The closing years of the twentieth century and the beginning years of the twenty fi rst century have seen an explosive interest in photography, Although the technology of digital imaging is new, most of the basic concepts involved in digital photography?a from the characteristics of the light illuminating and refl ected fromthe topic, to the process of forming an optical image, to the sensitometricand colorimetric characteristics of the digital image, to the visual perception of the fi nal image?aremain exactly the same. Some of the major advantages of a digital image are that the captured image can be seen immediately, can easily be manipulated and transformed, and can easily be sent over the internet to potentially anywhere in the world including vehicles and stations in space.
