It's beefier and more capable than a compact digital camera. The digital SLR has interchangeable lenses, and it looks like a professional camera. It has a reputation for being intimidating. For this reason, many people prefer to use a mild-mannered compact digital camera that has as few buttons as possible. I used to be one of these people. When I made the transition from digital compact to digital SLR, I was surprised at how much happier I was — happier with my camera and happier with my pictures. My wife and I used to take pictures with compact digital cameras and thought they were good. We have thousands of photos to show for it. When we got our first digital SLR, we were blown away. The pictures we both took with our entry-level Sony Alpha 300 were that much better than any compact we had ever used. And, that was when we were just starting out. In fact, it was a few months later before I even tried taking the camera off Auto exposure mode. The pictures we took with our dSLR had less noise and were clearer, sharper, and more colorful. We found ourselves saying "Wow." You too can be a happier photographer. The task doesn't have to be super difficult or intimidating. Digital SLRs aren't meant just for professionals (although they use dSLRS for many good reasons). If you can drive a car, use an iPod, or operate a modern washing machine, you have what it takes to shoot great photos with a dSLR. Digital SLR Photography All-in-One For Dummies
