GIS For Dummies Review

GIS For Dummies is a 388 page book by Michael N. DeMers.The abbreviation of GIS is Geography Information System.This book is organized into six different parts/chapters which includes detailed study of geography of different items and also how geography helps when it goes digital,studying different patterns and its output and applications for those outputs.All the six chapters with a brief idea are as below :

The first chapter for GIS For Dummies is GIS : GIS For Dummies

Geographu On Steroids.This chapte rs gives a quick introduction about GIS and what exactly it is all about.It shows how basic geography background are required to represent map of the real world.Author has also introduced few mapping technology that is required to understand GIS.This chapter covers basics of map reading,symbolism,projections,generalization and scale issues.This chapter would show the power of map data and how to get it into the computer that will improve ones ability to use all contained information of map.

The second chapter of GIS For Dummies is Geography Goes Digital.

The topic of the chapter itself gives and idea that it deals with how to get maps paper data onto computer.This part teaches how to use GIS data on the computer.In this chapter Author has also place two basic models of maps for readers to understand grids, called raster and points, lines and polygons called vectors.Author has shown how to keep track of geographic features that are included in the GIS and how the model links the features to descriptive in formations which would give us the GIS output.
Retrieving, Counting And Characterizing Geography is the Third part of GIS For Dummies which deals with how to find the geographic features that are feeded as input into the database.It shows the different methods of searching the features and how to count once the features are found, and then describe those features.Author has described in detail how to locate and characterize features by type or category, according to the size and shapes and located them on basis of their geographic spaces between each other and measurements that describes them.

Chapter four of GIS For Dummies is Analyzing Geographic Patterns.

This chapter one would find how to measure lengths, areas, distance and volumes and work with network like road, rail, highway,streets etc.Author has explained ways to analyze the river and where water would actually flow during flood time.Author has also showed h ow to combine maps and use map algebra in the same chapter.
Chapter five of GIS For Dummies is GIS Output And Applications, which deals to find out all details on map and non map outputs which one can use to explain the results.Author has shown ways how GIS generates travel directions,alarms and moves that shows maps through time.Author has wonderfully explained how to implement these ideas on an organization so that one can get better place and power in that organization.
The Part Of Tens is the 6th chapter of GIS For Dummies in which the author has shortlisted good 10 GIS software vendors and the services and product these vendors provide.The most important thing that the author has provided in the book is the list of sources of GIS data from government and private companies.
I would conclude here informing the readers that GIS For Dummies is the correct book if you are looking forward to study and work on GIS further.
